A checklist for refreshing your website

Clarify goals, content, access and measurement before starting a redesign.

Define the problem and goal

Before starting a redesign, identify what is not working today. Are visitors struggling to find key details, is content difficult to update or does the site no longer explain your services? A clear goal helps guide scope decisions.

Note who uses the website and what they come to do. This helps the page structure reflect visitor needs rather than only the organization’s internal structure.

Prepare content and technical access

List existing pages, copy, imagery and forms. Mark what to keep, update, combine or remove. Brand assets, domain and hosting access, analytics tools and external services should also be identified early.

Agree on content owners and final approvers so that copy and image reviews do not unexpectedly extend the timeline.

Choose how to measure progress

Select a few indicators that match your goal, such as reaching the right page, completing a form, clicking a phone link or reducing the time needed to update content. Record the current baseline for comparison after launch.

Decide who will manage published content, what maintenance is needed and how future improvements will be handled.
